Curriculum Newsletters

Autumn 1

Maths is an integral part of the day in UKS2. All children take part in an hour maths lesson every day which is used to ensure every child has access to the National Curriculum. In order to enhance children’s understanding further, we have introduced maths meetings. These meetings are held for 10-15 minutes every afternoon and consist of chants, singing and the coverage of basic maths skills. We are already seeing a positive impact and hope this will continue as the year progresses. Below are the links to the some of the songs that we are currently using.

Literacy – Writing

The children have a 1 hour literacy lesson every day. Within these lessons, the children are taught a range of genres in accordance with the National Curriculum. Children will also cover a range of grammar skills in order to prepare them for their end of school exams.

Literacy – Reading

Children take part in daily guided reading sessions. These give the children the chance to either work with an adult or independently to progress their reading skills. This term we will be focusing on the children’s ability to use inference.

Literacy – Spelling

Children are set weekly spellings which follow the advised patterns as outlined within the National Curriculum. Tests are conducted on a Friday as part of children’s Literacy lessons. New spellings are provided on the same day, so that children have a full week to learn them at home by using the look, say, cover, check method.

Children take part in a range of indoor and outdoor activities in line with National Curriculum expectations. Children require an indoor and outdoor PE kit (as detailed in the school PE policy) every Thursday. It is important that they bring both, as at any time of year, the weather can be very changeable.

Time Travel

In Autumn 1 the children learnt all about Time Travel. In topic lessons they created time lines of their lives and of others, such as family members and famous people, as well as thinking about where they would go and what they could do if they could travel back in time!! The children also enjoyed reading Clockwork, by Philip Pullman, in English lessons and produced some excellent writing.

In Autumn 2 our Topic is Stargazers! The children have already completed some homework on the topic and are really excited to find out more about space. We have arranged for space experts from Durham University and Kielder Observatory to come and help answer all of their questions!

Some of last years topics

Beast Creator
Arachnids, invertebrates, molluscs and myriapods….. What’s the difference? The children will investigate the life cycles of some of the planets more unusual wildlife. Life in a rock pool isn’t as simple as it may appear…

Scream Machine
In this topic, we will be focusing on the unique sights, smells and sounds of the fair. Children will learn about forces and electricity to discover how rides work, as well as perfecting the art of advertising by convincing others their Theme Park is the one to visit!

A Child’s War
The children will be learning all about World War II; particularly the impact of the war upon children such as evacuation, roles and responsibilities and the impact upon families when fathers and older siblings went away to fight for their country.

The children will be given a set of challenges every two weeks and will need to complete at least two of them. Below are some pictures of our amazing homework from the first challenges that were set this year.  Alongside the challenges children are also expected to read, practise times table and learn their spellings every night.
